Do you love books?
Do you spend more time with your headphones on than off?
Do you have multiple language skills?
If so, we have a great freelance opportunity that might be for you.
Here at Penguin Studios we are expanding our self-employed Freelance Proofing Pool, and looking for avid listeners to assist in our audiobook production. As a proofer you would be working with sound editors and producers to fully assess audiobooks, checking them against the original text, acting as the final test for them to pass before they go up for sale. You’ll need to have a great vocabulary, a good handle on correct pronunciations, close attention to character and plot detail, and the ability to pick up on glitches or missed edits.
Multiple language skills or ancient languages are a big plus, and we are looking for proofers with all sorts of expertise. You might be making sure that the Arabic, Hindi or French characters in our latest novel have their pronunciations spot on, ensuring that the names of Ancient Greek philosophers are said correctly in our Penguin Classics, or checking for missed edits, words or differences to the original text. So, whether you have multiple linguistic skills, or have a particular knowledge of a subject or a place, we’d like to hear from you. We produce books on every subject, so if there is a topic that is a specialism for you: let us know in your application.
We’re looking for people that can join our Proofing Pool. If you’re successful, you might have anywhere from 5 to 35 hours of audio to listen to per month. Let us know your general availability in your application. Whilst we can’t guarantee a level of work to come your way, we will do our best to match you with projects that suit you and your availability. We’ll be running a series of proofing tests and webinars to train you up to our production standard.
So, if you’ve got a passion books, and love audio, please get in touch. We pay competitively. For first round proofs, working directly with the producer and sound editor, we pay £18 per finished hour of audio. For second proofs, we pay £15 per finished hour of audio.
If you’ve got any further questions on rates, please contact email@example.com
Apply with a short CV and a document or audio clip answering these questions in no more than 500 words:
- Can you tell us about a book that you’ve read or listened to recently, and what you liked about it?
- Can you tell us about a time that you’ve used attention to detail to complete a piece of work?
- Why do you think you’d be a great audiobook proof listener?
Applications are open until 28th February. If you are successful, a member of the Audio Team will be in touch directly.
